whAT’S IN NAME?
37ESSEX
Our name has roots. My Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather, and Grandmother, Isaac and Sarah Gellis, Russian immigrants looking for a better life for their family, moved to the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the late 1800s.
They opened a Kosher Delicatessen at 37 Essex Street in 1872. It was one of the first Kosher butcher shops and delicatessens in the LES. Isaac Gellis Kosher Provisions quickly became New York's largest purveyors of meat, salami, cold cuts, hot dogs, smoked fish, sausages, and other brined, cured, and smoked delicacies. They supplied Katz's, Carnegie Deli, and Second Avenue Deli.
Isaac and Sarah became integral parts of the growing Jewish community on the Lower East Side. They helped found the Eldridge Street Synagogue and kept their meat prices affordable for the entire community. If you were ever in need, Sarah would make sure your family was fed on Shabbat, and your children had clothes on their backs. For over 100 years, Isaac Gellis Provisions supplied grocery stores and restaurants until the company was sold, and my grandparents retired.
As a child, I remember running to my grandma and grandpa's house excited to eat salami sandwiches with mustard on rye. There wasn't a better salami out there and still isn't. An homage to my long linage of entrepreneurs and dream chasers, I've named my design studio, 37ESSEX.
